Harriers Take Fifth at Center
The Maine West cross country teams began their fall season with wins in several dual meets and high finishes in two invitationals.

The first meet took place on Sept. 8 at the Union Oil fields. The harriers took on the Conant and Barrington in a tri-meet. The Warriors were victorious on all levels against both opponents. The varsity defeated Conant, 18-40, and Barrington, 21-38. The sophomores scored 24 points to Conant's 35 and 25 points while Barrington had 32. The freshmen defeated Conant and Barrington, in both cases by a 15-50 score.

On Sept. 10 the Warriors hosted their own Center Meet. The Center Meet is one of the biggest meets in the state. This year's field had teams from 24 schools from all over Illinois and Wisconsin. This year for the first time there was a race for girls' teams.

Overall, Loyola of Chicago was the winner. The Warriors finished in fifth place. In the individual races the varsity finished fifth. The "B" varsity sixth, junior varsity seventh, the sophomores finished in fourteenth, while the freshman captured third place. The Maine West girls' team finished fifth in the girls' division.

The varsity team was led by Morris Danielson in twenty‑first place. He was followed by Bob Fischer, forty‑fourth, Dave Ahlman, fifty‑first, Ron Pawelko, sixty‑third, Jukka Kallio, seventy‑second, Brian Swartswalter, one hundred and second, and Jeff Wilhelm in one hundred and third place. Varsity Coach Bill Barninger was pleased by his teams' performance.
The runners had a dual meet at home against New Trier West on Sept. 15. The varsity won by a 27-30 margin. The top finisher was Dave Ahlman in second. Dave was followed by Bob Fischer in fourth, Morris Danielson in sixth, Ron Pawelko in seventh, Jukka Kallio in eighth, Kent Towler in tenth, John Keith in eleventh, and John Cuday in fifteenth.

Other varsity runners who raced were Charlie Czarnecki, Bob Schultz, Ken Lehnardt, Brian Swartswalter, Kevin Murray, Jeff Wilhelm, and Don Glass. The sophomores were victorious 10-29 as were the freshman 16-43.

Last Saturday the harriers competed in the Proviso West Invitational. The Warriors finished second as a team. State champ Deerfield was the meet winner. The varsity team finished in thirteenth place. The top runners were Morris Danielson, thirty‑third, Dave Ahlman, forty‑fourth, Jukka Kallio, sixty‑third, Ron Pawelko, eighty‑second, Kent Towler, eighty‑third, Bob Fischer, one-hundred‑eighteenth, and Jeff Wilhelm, one‑hundred‑fifty‑fifth.

The junior varsity finished in fifth place. Jon Keith was the top JV finisher for West. He was followed by John Cudahy, Bob Schultz, George Larson, Doug Murray, Rich Spencer, Brian Swartswalter, Ken Lehnardt, George Bobrytske, John Peterson, Jeff Miller, Ray Pawelko, and Joel Martell respectively. The sophomores also placed fifth, while the freshmen finished in second place.

Coach Barringer is "very optimistic" about the rest of the season saying, "The runners have been performing very well considering the majority of last year's team was lost through graduation."
