School Grades Hinder Joy
GRADES!!!! Some Wednesday in the very near future, you will be handed a slip of paper which will determine the fate of your classes. It also may decide if you are going to summer school or to vacation somewhere a whole lot more exciting than the sizzling classrooms of Maine West.

One student walking down the halls the other day must have suffered a major academic disaster. He was moaning, "My dad will hit 9.9 on the Richter scale." The last I heard him say was "A five letter drop in one quarter. I didn't think it was possible."

This student's problem is quite typical. The same situation is occurring among hordes of other students, from freshmen to seniors. It is the seniors who are the least concerned about their grades. They figure that they have already been accepted for college. They are in. On the other end of the scale are the juniors. Their feelings result from the fact that when they send in their applications, they don't want the D in English or the C- in math to keep them from the college of their choice.
Many students ignore the slump. It is these students who really make the most out of spring. These are the ones whom you see on T.V. when you're watching replays from the Cub opener.

Spring causes interesting results even among the teachers. Some, like Mr. Robert Curtis and Mr. John Hugh, take classes outside to wander around the school grounds. Others have their classes sit outside on their own time and write papers on "The Glories of Spring."

Spring causes actions other than the perennial blight of slipping grade point averages. The protest over open campus last year took place on a sunny, spring day. In all likelihood, if that day had been cold and rainy, the protest would have never occurred.

Spring is made most pleasant by what it precedes. One thing which is on everyone's mind, is summer. With every day that passes, we draw one day closer to a day known to all‑June 16. That is when the real fun begins. All the fun and all the parties which are held in spring are nothing compared to what goes on when summer is here.
