Win Opens Boys' Baseball Season
The Central Suburban South Conference champions of the 1977 season started the 1978 season on the upswing winning three of their first four games on the varsity level. The varsity team of one year ago had an impressive 19-4 record and hopes to improve on it this year.

An undefeated Freeport team ran up against a tough offense of Warrior hitters last Saturday, losing 10-2. An outstanding pitching performance by Greg Herdzina held Freeport to only two unearned runs. Herdzina went the distance (seven inflings) without giving up one single earned run. At the plate Pete Bryl went 3 for 3.

On the JV level Warriors pitching was also worth mentioning as Ron Heyse, Gary Crossland, and Phil Edwards combined to hand Freeport a 3-0 shutout.

The free swinging Warriors were at their best against Wheaton beating the undefeated team by a score of 13-3. Everyone was hitting including senior Mike Wieglos who contributed a threerun home run. Bob Tasovac and the rest of West got off to a slow start dropping behind in the first inning, 3-0. It wasn't until the bottom of the third inning that Maine West started their "crush" on Wheaton, and in five innings they scored 13 runs. Bob Tasovac went five innings picking up the win. Pete Bryl completed the last two innings.

Gary Crossland and Mike Franklin put together a seven‑inning, three‑hit shutout facing Wheaton on the JV level.

Once again Warrior pitching sparkled and together with the offense established a 6-0 victory.

Deerfield also had to face Warrior pitching and managed only one hit against Greg Herdzina in five innings. Phil Edwards completed the game without giving up a hit. Jim Lamberty went 2 for 3 including a double. The final score of the game was Maine West 7, Deerfield 1.

Maine West scored only three runs in a losing battle against Oak Park, the final score 11-3. Oak Park scored six runs in the second inning, and that was all they needed for victory. Tim Richardson had two RBI's and Bob Tasovac took the loss.

So far this year Maine West pitching has been superb with Greg Herdzina, Bob Tasovac, and Pete Bryl. A lack of experience was supposed to hurt the Warriors this year; but as of now, West is winning very convincingly, their only loss being to Oak Park. When asked about the possiblity of the lack of experience, one junior player replied, "It is not going to hurt us too much. All the juniors are hitting like crazy."

This year's starting lineup for the Maine West varsity squad is as follows: Bill Garesch, catcher; Mike Matkovic, first base; Steve Zilleox, second base; Rich Battalini, shortstop; Tim Richardson, third base; Carl Henk, left field; Mike Wiegios, right field; Jim Lamberty, centerfield; and Pete Bryl, designated hitter.
