Democracy Requires Interest
BY HEATHER McCUNE
Students today do not take enough of an interest in government: school, local, or national. America has one of the greatest forms of government in existence today. The democratic system allows us more freedom than any other.
Student concern only seems to surface when there is a problem. If a matter directly affects students' lives, then the all of a sudden are just bursting with concern. Today the question of whether the United States should advice Mexico to discontinue the spray of paraquat on marijuana plants has brought many people into action. Demonstrations have been held and many letters have been written since the issue was brought into the public eye. These people, with others, are now complaining about the way the government is handling this issue and many more.
The democratic system allows us to choose our leaders. We have the right to vote and select whom we want to represent us and make our decisions for us. Recently Student Council held elections for next year‑president and vice‑president. Did you take the time to vote? If you did vote, was it truly for the candidate whom you felt would to the best job or was it for a friend?
Every government, whether it be school or national, needs an informed electorate. We must know what the issues are, open campus or a new energy bill, and just what they will mean to all. It is our government, take the time; get involved and support the democratic system.
