Open Campus Still an Issue
To Maine West Students
BY JERRY WOLOWICZ

Open campus has been a topic of discussion here at Maine West for the past few years. Although the administration, Board of Education, town merchants, and students' parents have usually had negative comments on the subject, open campus would really not be a hard thing to adjust to.

First of all, certain ground rules would definitely have to be set up. These rules would have to be very strict, and failure of a student to abide by them would cause that student very harsh punishment.

One rule that might be put into effect if open campus were to be allowed would be to really track down on students who cut any class. If a student chooses not to go to class, but rather leaves campus, he or she would have to take the difficult consequences. The correct time to take advantage of open campus is during PAR or study periods. Sitting in the cafeteria or study halls is a definite waste of time.
Maybe if students here at Maine West went about achieving open campus in a different way, it could actually happen. Last year when some of the student body chose to have a walk out, chances of open campus ever happening were severely hampered. If students would talk the issue over intelligently with their parents or maybe discuss the matter with some of the disagreeing merchants or members of the administration or just act more maturely about the subject in general, open campus could become a reality here at Maine West.

Both the opposing sides, those in favor of open campus and those against it, have to make a big compromise. If those against open campus would finally give in and allow it and those for it follow the rules, there is no reason why open campus should not happen.
