Girls' Track Closes Season
The Maine West girls' track team is near the end of the season. The League Meet will be held tomorrow at Niles West at 9 a.m.
The girls' team won 13 out of 16 events, including all 12 running races, to race past Niles East, 92-36, on Apr. 25 at Niles.
The Warrior gals were paced by Lisa Payne who won both hurdle races and anchored the winning mile‑relay team.
Karen George and Joyce Hanachek placed first and second in the two‑mile fun; and Diane Schneider, Judy Gielarowski, and Laura Derken swept all three places in the 100‑yard dash.
In the 880‑yard run Jymette Bonnivier teamed up with Nancy Lowenherz to place first and third. In the 440‑yard dash Julie Stenstrom and Anne Tortorelli placed first and second for the Warriors, while Donna Carstens and Kathy Baumhart finished first and third in the mile. Shelly Carpentier, Judy Gielarowski, and Tern Idstein sprinted past all their Trojan opponents to sweep the 220‑yard dash.
Anne Vaccarello won the discus and placed second in the shot put. Linda Miller scored a second in the discus and Judy Gielarowski, a third in the long jump, to round out the scoring for the team.
The track team placed sixth with 31 points in a tough 18 team invitational held at Evanston. Coach William Kiddle says, "The meet score indicates an excellent team effort as 20 girls posted seasonal or career best marks at the meet." Lisa Payne was a double winner in the 100 and 200‑meter hurdles with meet record times. Jymette Bonnivier placed third in the 800‑meter run, and Linda Miller placed fifth in the discus.
On Apr. 17 Maine West competed against a tough Maine South team and Waukegan East. The Warriors were defeated by the Hawks and were victorious over Waukegan East.
