Boys' Tennis Wins Recent Meets
The Maine West tennis team has shown improvement over the past few weeks. Against Glenbard East on May 8, the varsity squad took a close match, 3 to 2. In the singles competition Jeff English lost in two sets to a strong opponent. Tom Gebhardt was more successful as he defeated his opponent in two sets, 6-4 and 6-1. Kevin Cooper also lost in two sets, 1-6 and 3-6.
The doubles teams of Rich Gearhardt and Bob Unfer and Bob Wyatt and Keith Peterson were more successful. They pulled the match out of the fire by winning all four sets. Gearhardt and Unfer took their match by margins of 6-3 and 6-1. Wyatt and Peterson faced even weaker opposition as they rolled over their opponents, 6-1 and 6-2.
The tennis squad was even more successful against Wheaton Central. English blanked his opponent in the first singles competition, 6-0, 6-0, to set up the varsity victory of four matches to one. Gebhardt also beat his opponent by scores of 6-1 and 6-4. Cooper suffered the only defeat of the meet, as he succumbed to his opponent, 5-7 and 4-6. Gearhardt and Unfer were also victors as they won their match, 7-5 and 6-3. Not to be outdone, the second doubles team captures a victory, winning by scores of 6-1 and 6-2.
Things did not work out well at New Trier East. The squad was defeated soundly by a tough opponent, 4-1. The sole Warrior winner was Tom Gebhardt. He beat his adversary soundly, 6-2 and 6-3. Gearhardt and Unfer lost a close match in three sets. Out of these, they lost the first, 3-6, but won the second, 7-6. In the deciding set, they were defeated, 2-6.
The Warriors got back on the winning trail on May 12 by beating Buffalo Grove, 4-1. English won in two close sets, 6-4 and 7-5. Cooper suffered the sole defeat to a tough opponent, 5-7 and 2-6. Wyatt and Peterson experienced no difficulty as they rolled to victory, 6-2 and 6-0.
Against Deerfield the Warriors suffered a close defeat by losing three matches and winning only two. English won his match in three sets, 6-1, 6-7, and 6-1. The other winner was Gebhardt who was victorious, 6-1 and 6-4.
Forest View proved to be no challenge for the Warriors, as the Warriors swept all matches and won the meet, 5-0. The only close match was experienced by Gearhardt and Unfer as they won in three sets. Gebhardt romped over his opponent, blanking him in two sets.
The freshmen and sophomores have not been doing as well as the varsity squad. In recent matches they have lost to Maine East, 5-0, and to Glenbrook South, 4-i. In a recent contest with eight other schools, they experienced difficulties and took last place.
