Legionaires Announce
Constitution Winners
This year's winners of the Constitution Contest were selected on the basis of an objective examination and then an oral final. The objective examination was held on Apr. 26 and open to all Maine West students. The oral final was held on May 4, during which a panel of four Legionnaires from the American Legion, Post 36, conducted the final and selected the winners.
Selected for first place and winning a $200 scholarship was Douglas Strand '79. Second place was given to Yvonne Pytlik '79, along with a $100 scholarship; and Jim Herzau was awarded third place alternate. The 13 finalists selected from the objective exam, all of which were seniors, were Morris Danielson, Jeff Deckrow, Rick Dsida, Don Glass, Jim Herzau, Jenny Johnson, Corinna Karpiel, Perri Meissner, Yvonne Pytlik, Pat Schneider, Vince Schulz, Doug Strand, and Wayne Beth.
Mr. Eric Edstrom, chairman of the Social Science Department, in commenting on the winners, said, "These honored students of Maine West have brought distinction to themselves and Maine West. I am proud of all of our finalists and our students who continue to show an interest in the U.S. Constitution."
The Constitution Contest has been a part of the Maine West tradition for 42 years. On display in the LRC is a plaque commemorating the first place winners since Maine West's opening. All questions asked on the oral examination were based on practical application of constitutional principles in current issues. The scholarships were given by the American Legion, Post 36, of Des Plaines.
