Illinois Boy's, Girl's State 1978
Recipients Named
The 1978 Illinois Boy's and Girl's State winners have been named from Maine West. They are Marian Baker '79 and Jeff Currer '79.
The Junior Class currently taking United States history voted May 3 from a ballot with 12 boys and girls with the winners selected from the ballot In addition to Marian and Jeff, four alternates were selected to replace the winners if they are unable to attend. The alternates for the Girl's State program are Holly Hamilton '79, first alternate, and Kathleen Gradl '79, second alternate. The Boy's State alternates are Mike Dsida '79, first alternate, and Rich Bistany '79, second alternate. The boy's winner, Jeff Currer, is currently taking United States History Advanced Placement and the girl's winner, Marian Baker, is in United States history and anthropology.
The nationwide program sponsored by the American Legion goes from June 12 to 16. Both winners will attend compressed courses in practical politics and citizenship. An all‑expense paid trip to the mythical Illinois State is held on two university campuses. The Girl's State winners will spend their time at MacMurray College in Jacksonville, Illinois. The Boy's State winners will attend the Illinois State University at Normal, Illinois.
Maine Township High Schools have been associated with the Illinois Boy's and Girl's State program since 1934 when the program first originated in Illinois and then spread across the nation to all 50 states. Maine West has been participating since its opening in 1959.
