Baseball Vies for Conference
The Maine West varsity baseball team remains in contention for first place in the conference by winning two of three games the past week. The Warriors defeated Glenbrook North and Maine South but dropped a decision to Maine East.
On May 10 the Warriors dropped a 7-3 decision to the Demons of Maine East. Greg Herdzina was knocked out early as the Demons scored four runs. The few bright spots for the Warriors were the hitting of Tim Richardson and Karl Henk. Richardson was three for four, and Karl Henk was two for three.
On May 9 it was a different story as the Warriors jumped out to a quick 10-0 lead (scoring one in the first, three in the third, two in the fourth, and four in the fifth). Willie Garesche was three for three including a solo home run and three runs driven in. Henk was three for five and drove in a pair of runs. Peter Bryl was the winning pitcher as he threw a seven-hitter allowing only one major mistake, a home run by the opposing pitcher, as the Warriors defeated Glenbrook North, 11-5.
On May S Greg Herdzina threw a fivehitter as the Warriors defeated rivals, the Maine South Hawks, 5-2. The Warriors opened the scoring in the fourth. Tim Richardson and Jim Lamberty drove in a run each. The score was 3-2 going into the seventh when four Warrior hits by Lamberty, Kane, Rich Battaglini, and Steve Zilleox brought in two runs to put the icing on the cake. Steve Zilleox and Karl Henk each tallied two hits for the Warriors and Mike Matkovic had a perfect day at the plate going three for three.
The sophomores ran their record up to an incredible 11-1 overall and 7-0 in conference.
The Warriors defeated Glenbrook North, 13-6, and Maine East, 11-3. Randy Ross collected three triples while Chip Holler connected for three hits against Maine East. Coach Don Olson said, "Good hitting (15 hits against the Demons) and steady pitching have led to the Warriors' success."
Today, the Warriors start the I.H.S.A. Baseball tournament.
