Languages Hold First Honors Night
Maine West's Language Department held its first annual honors night on Wednesday, May 24. Over 21 Spanish, French, and German students received recognition for their performances in national language competition.

The majority of award winners competed in Spanish. They include Dawn Fridley '81, Linda Heinrich '81, and Bonnie Huck '81 at the first‑year level; Elizabeth Kaminsky '80, Mary Niemczyck '81, and Tracy Scheffel '80 at the second‑year level; Mary Androff '80, Tamara Klimek '80, and Bill Majors '80 at the third‑year level; Sue Berner '79, Ann Hernandez '79, Kim McAvoy '79, and Linda Olson '79 at the fourth‑year level; and Cheryl Bergman '78, Jenny Johnson '78, Karen Kuchel '78, and Sandy Rose '78, at the fifth‑year level.
Three French students also competed in the national language exams this year: Eva Seidler '79, third year level. Fourth‑year German contestants Shari Schlachter '78 and Dolores Sonstroem '78 completed the list of national language exam competitors.

The Chicago-northern suburbs chapter of the Deutsch-Americanische National Kongress (DANK) also presented an award during the language honors night. The DANK award was presented to the most outstanding German student in each of 10 high schools in the Chicago-northern suburban area. Maine West's DANK award winner, Roland Weis '78, received a check for $40 as well as a certificate and a letter of recommendation.
