Six Seniors Reach Merit Semifinals
Six Maine West seniors were announced as 1978 National Merit Semifinalists recently. The students are Sharon Ball, Richard Dsida, Don Glass, James Herzau, Kathleen Sandford, and Eileen Wall.
About 15,000 semifinalists were chosen out of some one million students who took the 1976 Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test‑National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test last fall.
In this, the twenty‑third National Merit Scholarship competition, a total of 101 Chicago students became semifinalists. There were also 492 Chicago suburban and 135 downstate winners.
These students will now go on to compete for almost 3,900 scholarships to be awarded next year. Out of these, more than 1,000 corporate‑sponsored, fouryear scholarships will be given. These are designated for the children of company employees and are worth between $1,000 and $6,000.
There are also college sponsored scholarships which are financed by various colleges and universities and the scholarships awarded by the National Merit Corporation.
Semifinalists attain finalist standing by taking a second test similar to the PSAT. They must also receive endorsement from their high school principal and submit their high school records.
Over 90 per cent of the 15,000 semifinalists are expected to become finalists. They were selected by placing in the top half of one per cent of the scores in last year's nationwide PSAT‑NMSQT examination.
