Traditions Face Change at West
With Homecoming a mere two weeks away, many people reflect on the idea of tradition. This year, unlike others, Maine West will be represented by a Homecoming KING. What? It's not traditional! It won't work. Well, all traditions must have a beginning. For example, three years ago, the Homecoming Pep Assembly was held on Friday afternoon. For the past two years we have had the Pep Rally on Thursday night. It is now considered a tradition to hold the Pep Rally on Thursday.
People like things to go on in the same manner and count on things to happen over and over again. They do not feel secure with changes. Without changes the world would not progress, and we would most likely be living in the Dark Ages. We'd like to compliment the Student Council on their decision to enliven Homecoming this year with a few changes.
Speaking of tradition, approximately 99 per cent of the Maine West student body has broken a school tradition. How many students have rushed down the main staircase and out the front door without taking a look where they are stepping? Has everyone forgotten the tradition of not stepping on the school seal? Perhaps the Class of '81 was not informed of this tradition and the upper classmen simply follow in the footsteps of the freshmen. Well, on the other hand, maybe they haven't even noticed it yet! Next time you are in the front entrance pretend you're looking at your shoes and take notice of the seal.
As always it is traditional for the student body to take part in the Homecoming activities. With the Diamond Jubilee year underway, Maine West is ready to show their "Spirit West."
