VOL. XIX, NO. 2
Sophomores assembled on Thursday, Sept. 22 for the annual Junior Achievement assembly. Junior Achievement (JA) is open to any sophomore, junior, or senior.
JA is an organization composed of many companies. Teen members of JA run the company, along with the help of an adult adviser. Centel and United Airlines are examples of participating companies.
Maine West junior, Mark Wojnowiak, is a member of JA. Mark commented, "Junior Achievement was interesting last year. I was vice-president of marketing for Made in America, which was sponsored by Pullman Standard. I got to meet new people, go places and have fun.
"I met General Jim McDivitt, the astronaut, who is chairman of the board for Pullman and I went to the southside Pullman plant where railroad cars are made. The highlight of the year had to be the end‑of‑the‑year Future Unlimited banquet at the Conrad Hilton in Chicago. It was a fun year and I'm looking forward to joining again this year."
JA sells stock, elects officers, and chooses a product. They then manufacture and sell this product all year. Also, special activities are planned such as conferences at universities, trade fairs at Randhurst and Woodfield, tours and dinners with the sponsoring company and advisors, and sometimes a company party or picnic are part of the JA program.
Although achievers do receive small wages, most of the benefits are social or scholastic. They learn how a company is run, how and why to keep accurate records, and how to figure taxes, payrolls, and commissions.
Maine West Junior Achiever Kim McAvoy '79 remarked, "Last year I decided to try JA to see what it was all about, and also to make a little money. I was elected company treasurer, and I really liked it. I made many new friends and really had a good time. I recommend JA to anyone who can spare two hours a week for a good learning experience, a little money, and a lot of fun."
