Student Involvement: Key to MW Success?
Dear Editor:
We would like to express our feelings about your editorial in the Sept. 23 issue of the Westerner. We think it is great that students join clubs and take an active part in school. Whether it be WMTH‑FM, Ski Club, Psychology Club, Swim Guards, or Hiking Club, everyone should get involved and be a part of Maine West during their high school years.

But, the fact that there are only two mornings, Thursday and Friday, set aside for clubs or organizations to meet, makes it difficult to join more than two clubs and get totally involved in each of them.

I questioned Mr. Burk, assistant principal, about this problem, and he stated that students should spend a certain amount of time in homeroom to hear the daily bulletin, take attendance, and so on. Student and Class Council meetings are held on Tuesday mornings and on Thursday and Friday, 10 minutes of the homeroom period is set aside for most other meetings.
To make a decision between what clubs to join would just defeat the purpose. "Participation is the key to success of any school." (As said in the editorial.)

But, then again, there are the organizations that make it mandatory to attend meetings every day during the homeroom period, which also defers the chances of attending any other kind of club meetings on those days.

In conclusion, sponsors should not have a prima donna attitude toward their organization or club and should be flexible and allow its members to attend other club meetings.
