Have you always had the desire to join a team in high school but athletics just isn't your thing? Well the Maine West Speech and Debate Teams offer you the opportunity you have been looking for.
The Debate Team, like the Speech Team, participates in interscholastic competition. The Debate Team's first meet is Oct. 15 at Loyola.
Dean Hammer, the captain of the Debate Team, feels, "After completing a successful season last year, we are looking forward to continuing our winning ways." The members of the debate team are Jeff Stine '78, Mike Clark '78, Kerry Skora '78, Dean Hammer '78, Steve Burek '79, Doug Strand '79, Yvonne Pytlik '79, Tom Stone '79, Andy Peterson '79, Steve Hines '80, and Julie Calabrese '81.

The Speech Team will begin its competition on Oct. 22 with a tournament at Northeastern College. The categories available on the speech team are humorous and dramatic duets, humorous and dramatic interpretation, prose and poetry reading, original oration, original comedy, oratorical declamation an, and extemporaneous speaking.
Maine West will host a tournament on Oct. 29, the Maine Invitational. This meet was scheduled for last year but had to be cancelled due to the extremely cold weather last winter. Sixty-six schools will be entered in the competition. In comparison to other tournaments, this one is very large. The average participation of schools in a tournament is somewhere between 40 and 50.
