Coach Mortier Brings Success
to Football
One of the main reasons for this season's improvements in this year's varsity football team is new head Coach Dan Mortier.
Coach Mortier was given the job after previous Coach Jim Morel retired last spring after a disappointing 2-7 record last season.
Coach Mortier started at Streator High School before coming to Maine West in 1975 as a head freshman coach. His Ateam was 5-3 that year in the tough Central Suburban League.
In 1976 he moved up to an assistant varsity coach and helped to build a superb line which had one all conference guard, two honorable mention tackles, and one honorable mention center.
Coach Mortier has built high hopes for Warrior fans this season by installing a power offense and a stalwart defense.
This is a change from past Maine West teams which relied on the big play behind Bob Zuccarini's passing. This year's team relies on a grind‑em‑out, 5‑yards ‑a nd‑a‑cloud‑of‑dust running game and very little passing.
For the rest of this season Coach Mortier says, "We're just going to take one game at a time and keep a positive mental attitude."
