Pep Club Invites School Spirit
BY JOANNE DENK

Are you one of the many Maine West students who thinks school is the same boring routine five days a week? If so, then "It's your own fault," stated Mr. John Carle, Pep Club sponsor.

"If school isn't the way we like it, only we can change it," he pointed out. One way to remedy boredom is to get involved, and Pep Club is a great way to do it.

Even if you don't want to join, you can still show school spirit. All of you can show your school spirit by sitting in the Pep Club section of the bleachers and cheering on our teams at football and soccer games. Not only will you enjoy yourself more, but our teams will know they have your support and will be urged on to more and greater victories.

With Homecoming going on right now there are plenty of ways to show your blue, gold, and white. This past week students have been painting store windows all around Maine West to notify the public of our Homecoming.

Last night at the pep rally we saw what might be the beginning of a new tradition. The tug-of-war featured the participation of a new class of Warriors - the faculty.
"Teachers don't like school to be boring either," Mr. Carle remarked. "We feel if no one else is going to show spirit, we are." The Pep Club sponsored the tug-of-war and rewarded the winning class with all the free Coke and pizza they could eat.

Another new event this year was the race around the track pushing Volkswagons. Unlike the tug‑of‑war in which teams are measured by weight, these teams were set by number of participants only.

A change that many of us will regret this year is the end of the pep bus. The reason for this is the expense. Now cheerleaders are transported to away games in the two mini-buses. Funds that would be going toward pep buses will now be used for more spirit-promoting campaigns inside of school. "We would like to give away or sell at very low prices articles such as bumper stickers and buttons or use the money to buy T-shirts for many clubs, including Pep Club.

"The way I view Pep Club," he concluded, "is as an attempt to make school more fun. Most of us feel that if we see blue, gold, and white, and 'Maine West' all around school it will generate more spirit and greater involvement."
