Helium Balloons Travel Far
Members of the Science Club inflated approximately 400 balloons with a helium tank they had rented from Chicago on Friday, Oct. 21, after school.

The balloons were sold at the Homecoming game for $.25 each or two for $.40. Each balloon had a tag on it explaining that it was from Maine West and asking to report back to Maine West where it had landed.

For the past three or four years Science Club has been doing this. Its main purpose to raise money for their club. This year they made over $25 from the balloons. The officers for the Science Club are Rich Baron, president; Kathy Jacobson, vice president; and Debbie Oller, secretary. Mr. Charles McCarter and Mr. Brian Olivier are the faculty sponsors of the club.
There were about 20 responses from different people all over the country. There were some from New York, Canada, Pennsylvania, Michigan, and a few other places. While hunting in the Salt Run area of Cameron County, Don Caton found a balloon at noon on Saturday, Oct. 22 in Pennsylvania.

When asked about the turn-ups of the Homecoming balloons, Mr. McCarter replied, "I thought they would end up in Lake Michigan because of the direction of the wind. But evidently they were blown right over Lake Michigan."
