Principal Receives Honor of Excellence
Principal James Coburn of Maine West has been awarded a certificate of excellence by the state superintendent of education, Mr. Joseph Cronin, for being an outstanding principal.

The award was presented at the fourth annual "Those Who Excel" awards program sponsored by the Illinois Office of Education, Friday, Oct. 21, at the Hyatt Regency Chicago.

Awards were given in five categories. They are outstanding school board member, outstanding teacher, outstanding school administrator, outstanding parent, and outstanding student.

Mr. Coburn was chosen by a committee composed of organizations representing school board members, parents, teachers, and students. Their decision was based on Mr. Coburn's leadership, ability to motivate and inspire others, ability to achieve constructive change, and his impact on education.

The committee's decision made Mr. Coburn the first principal from any of the Maine schools to win the award. When the decision was made, Mr. Coburn was recognized as one of the six best principals in Illinois out of 800.
When asked for his first reaction when the award was issued, Mr. Coburn stated, " I was proud that I was chosen, not for myself as much as for Maine West. The state superintendent would not have even considered me if Maine West wasn't an outstanding school."

Mr. Coburn stated his appreciation for the fine support the faculty and students had given him. When asked about what he felt of the student's attitude, he said, "I think the students' attitude is just great. I don't want it to change." Mr. Coburn voiced his appreciation for the myriads of congratulations that he has received.

District 207 Superintendent Richard Short said one of Mr. Coburn's outstanding attributes is his "humanism." He gives attention as he sees fit, to what is the proper thing to do for an individual as a human being."

Others who won awards from nearby towns are Mr. Joseph Barthel, teacher at Berkley School in Arlington Heights, and Ms. Margarete Schmoldt from Elgin where she teaches at Channing Memorial School.
