Speech Team Places Sixth
at Invitational
The Maine West Speech Team played host to 60 schools at the Maine Invitational Speech Tournament held here on Oct. 29. The team placed sixth out of the 60 schools present.

Over 1,000 students from the northern Illinois high schools competed in 11 events which are divided into four categories including public speaking events, interpretive reading events, acting events, and original speaking events. There were 80 to 100 competitors in each of the 11 events.

The first place trophy was awarded to Warren High School. Evanston placed second; Wheaton Central took third; Maine East picked up fourth; and Shepard placed fifth.
High scorers for Maine West were as follows: Kevin Marquette '78, who captured a first place trophy for original comedy, and Maureen O'Malley '80, who placed second in humorous interpretation. Others who scored well for Maine West included Sue Ragusin '79, scoring high in original oration, and Debby Schumacher '79, a high scorer in, declarative speaking. Also, Jeff Stine '78 and Ann Zemaitis '78, humorous duet act scored well.

As far as future meets are concerned, Mr. Mills is confident because this year's team has more participants involved in more events than ever. According to Mr. Mills, "We will be really tough this year, Maine West has a reputation as one of the best, and we feel confident we will keep our reputation. We've gone downstate every year for five years; it has become a tradition we hope to maintain."
