Girls' Sports To Start Soon
The girls' winter sports season has just begun, and it is off to a good start. The sports this season are swimming, fencing, and basketball.
The swimming and the fencing teams began their seasons on Nov. 19. The swimming team was at the Cowgirl relays at New Trier West. Coach Peggy Mitchell said, "Since this is the beginning of the season, it will be interesting to see what teams have because of the change of season." When asked what she thought about the team this year, Mrs. Mitchell said, "We have a lot of depth, but I don't know how strong we are."
The next meet will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 30, at Maine West. The teams competing against our swimmers will be Prospect and Niles East.
The fencing team competed at the A.F.C.L. Invitational on Nov. 19. Some returning lettermen are seniors Mary Copeland, Sue Lindamen, and Linda Miller. On the J.V. team the returning lettermen are Holly Hamilton, Cathy Ptack, Jorie Downing, Marilyn Sauer, Jan Nelson, Marg Fankhauser, and Georgeann Weisgerber. Ms. Karen Kenyon said, "Prospects for this year are good, we expect to equal last year's record and hopefully improve it."
The fencing team has been unique in past years since we have had the only all girls' team around. The girls have competed against all boys teams and against mixed boy‑girl teams. But this year there is a boy out for the team.
The basketball team will begin their season on Dec. 20 with a game at Maine East at 6:30 p.m. The coaches for the team this year will be Mr. Leslie Jannusch and Miss Connie Bauman. The basketball season will finish at the end of March.
