Music Department Presents
Annual Christmas Concert
The Maine West Music Department presented its annual Christmas Concert on Friday, Dec. 9, at 8 p.m. in the auditorium.
The concert consisted of performances by the school's music organizations. Those who participated in it were the Concert Band, Concert Orchestra string section, the Concert Choir, Choraliers, and the Mixed Chorus.
Some of the selections played by the Concert Band were "Parade of the Wooden Soldiers," George Bizet's "The Farandole" from his "L'arlesienne Suite," and "Song of the Bells" by composer Leroy Anderson.
The Concert Orchestra string section played fantasia, performing the composition in an irregular, fanciful way, on "Green Sleeves" by Ralph Vaughn Williams. The selection featured the performances of pianist Meg Swensen '80 and two solo violinists, Mike Bock '79 and Donna Vilkaitus '79.
A special arrangement of Irving Berlin's "White Christmas" was also played by the orchestra. This piece of music was especially arranged for the Maine West orchestra by Mr. Burrell Gluskin, who is the jazz and concert band director at Triton College.
Soprano soloist Kris King '80, was also featured in the traditional Christmas carol, "O Holy Night." The Concert Choir performed a variety of songs including Mendelssohn's "There Shall Be a Star" from Jacob. The choraliers performed also by singing a novelty song, "Twelve Days After Christmas."
