VOL. XIX, NO. 5
Senator Percy Chooses
MW Student Senate Page
Do you know what a Senate page is? It's not a sheet of paper with writing on it nor is it a medieval rank of knighthood. It is an honorary attendant who serves in the chamber of Congress.
Karen Eschenbach '79 has been chosen by Senator Charles Percy to hold this honorary position. She will be leaving for Washington, D.C. the second week in January and will return some time in June.
On the evening of Nov. 21 Karen received a long distance phone call from Senator Percy asking her serve as his page for the spring session of Congress.
He told her she'd be staying in a dormitory near the Senate. Karen's first reactions were "I couldn't believe it; you've got to be kidding. I didn't have any hope left; it came as a complete surprise!"
Karen has been striving to obtain this position since eighth grade. When asked how she found out about this opportunity, she answered, "I saw a small section on a page in my Constitution book. My eighth grade Social Studies teacher, Mrs. Walsdorf from Algonquin Jr. High, sent a letter of recommendation to Senator Percy. I then received an application."
