Century III Awards Student
The Century III Leaders Scholarship award was presented to Alicia Roeder '78 of Maine West for her essay on America's needs and challenges for the future, according to Principal James Coburn.

Alicia scored highest in the local phase of the Century III Leaders Scholarship program. The program consists of national future studies, writing, citizenship, and current events. Alicia will now compete with other high school students throughout Illinois for one of two $1,000 scholarships. The two Illinois finalists will then receive an all‑expense‑paid trip to historical Williamsburg, Virginia, in February. There they will participate in seminars on current issues.

The third annual Century III National Leadership Seminar is sponsored by the National Association of Secondary School Principals and funded by the Shell Oil Company. Past speakers at these seminars have been architect/ futurist Buckminster Fuller and anthropologist Rene Dubos.

The students' essays were judged on their leadership quality, written viewpoints, and future American issues. Runners-up in the competition were James Niemczyk '78 and Bridget Brown '78.
