Cagers Hold First Place
In League Conference
The Maine West varsity cagers are 2-0 and in first place in the Central Suburban League South Conference, The Warriors are 5-2 overall.
On Dec. 2 the Warriors visited Waukegan East and came away with a 58-46 victory. Maine West got off to a slow start down 6-2 before they scored six straight points to get back in the game. Guard Tim Logisz got the Warriors rolling in the second half as he scored 16 of his game high 26 points. The Warriors' fullcourt pressure forced the Bulldogs into numerable turnovers, as the Warriors built a lead they would not relinquish. The Warriors were also aided by good free-throw shooting, hitting 22 of 29 from the line, Logisz hitting 10 of 10. Mike English added 12 points, Karl Henk had 9, and John Karabas added 8.
On Dec. 6 the Warriors were home for a conference game against the Glenbrook North Spartans.
In this game, like the last, the Warriors got off to a slow start. The Spartans grabbed an early seven‑point lead before the Warriors trimmed it to one at quarter's end. In the second quarter Logisz scored 12 of his 16 first half points and the Warriors added good defense for a 16 point halftime lead. In the third quarter the Warriors had to hold off a Spartan comeback as Mike Clark scored eight third quarter points, but the lead was trimmed to seven.
In the fourth quarter the Warriors pulled away for good as numerous Spartan fouls helped the warriors cold shooting. The Spartans pulled within eight points twice as the Warriors won their second straight conference game, 71-56. Logisz led all scorers with 26. Clark had 19; Schultz had 11; and Karrabas had 9.
Last Saturday the Warriors played Elk Grove in a non-conference game. The "Cardiac Kids" won the game by a score of 44‑42.
Logisz's 26 points and tough Warrior defense gave the Warriors their victory. Last year the Grenadiers ended the Warrior season in a 57-56 overtime heartbreaker. The Warriors took a quick 8-2 lead and increased it to 10 before quarter's end. The Maine West cagers held the lead the entire game as they won their third straight.
On the sophomore level the Warriors lost to Waukegan East, 47-44, and were victorious against Glenbrook North, 49-34, and Elk Grove, 56-39. Leading scorers for the Warriors were Jim Lindeman and Kent Heiden. The sophomores are 1-1 in conference and 3-3 overall.
The freshman team is 0-4 overall and 0-2 in conference as they lost to both Waukegan East, 46-43, and Glenbrook North, 44-43.
