On Tuesday, Nov. 22, the Maine West fencing team traveled to New Trier East. The varsity team won their ten to five with top A‑strip swordswomen Mary Copeland winning two bouts, Sue Lindeman winning three bouts, and Desiree Wiegleb winning one bout. On the B‑strip, Holly Hamilton won one bout; Janice Nelson and Kathy Ptach both won two bouts. The junior varsity lost to New Trier East 11 to 7.
Top fencer was Dawn Lyckberg winning two bouts. Merilyn Sauer, Marg Fankhauser, Csilla Remenyk, Sue Riek, and Carol Sawicki won one bout each.
For the first time in Maine West history West has three boys on the team - Steve Jones, Chris Battista, and Pat Clark. Maine West fences against almost all boys' teams against other schools.
On Monday, Dec. 5, the Maine West fencers lost to Marshall 12 to 6 on the varsity level and also lost on the junior varsity level. Top fencers for varsity were Mary Copeland, Linda Miller Holly Hamilton, Kathy Ptach, and Desiree Wiegleb. For the junior varsity Janice Nelson, Merilyn Sauer, and Chris Battista gave Maine West their three wins.
Mrs. Karen Kenyon, coach said, "We are in the middle of our season and are hoping for good performances against the remaining teams on our schedule."
