Gymnasts Drop Opening Meets
The varsity gymnastics team started off with a loss when they were defeated by Niles North, Nov. 26, by a score of 112 to 70.4. Then going against Evanston, Friday, Dec. 2, the Maine West varsity team was again overpowered 109 to 72.
Although their score improved Saturday, Dec. 3, it wasn't enough to beat Palatine's score of 107.
All is not bad news for the Warriors as the sophomores won against Niles North, 43.55 to 40. With scores improving the Warriors also beat Evanston, 52.95 to 49.13. Top scorer for the sophomores was Greg Coburn with a 5.6 in tumbling. The sophomores hit their highest score of the season when they beat Palatine, 69.71 to 68.35.
The freshman gymnastics team is undefeated in their first two meets of the season. Going against Niles North the Warriors had a score of 47.2 to North's 45.29. Top scorer in the meet was Tim Harris with a 7.5 in vaulting.
The freshman team also beat Evanston, 44.86 to 43.03. Tim Harris again scored highest with a 7.2 on vaulting.
In a triāmeet on Saturday, Dec. 10, against Glenbard East and Conant, the varsity team again met defeat with their lowest score this year, a 60.01. Jamie Rosner worked all around for the Warriors. Top scorers were Gary Crossland with a 4.75 in floor exercise and Ed Williams with a 3.4 on the highbar. Conant won that meet with a 105; Glenbard East came in second with 98 points.
The sophomores met defeat when Conant came in first place with 61.9 points. Glenbard East came in second with 59 points, while the Warriors scored a 53. High scorers for the sophomores were Greg Coburn scoring a 3.5 in tumbling and Tim Harris a 4.5 in vaulting.
The freshmen have their third meet on Saturday, Dec. 17, against Wheeling at home. The sophomores and varsity also go up against Wheeling. The freshman meet begins at 1 p.m., and the varsity begins at 2. All gymnastics meets are held in Awing gym.
