Girl Swimmers Show Ability
It has been a great season so far for the Maine West girls' swim team. The team's record so far is 3-2 this season.
Coach Peggy Mitchell is quite pleased with the team's performances this season and has high hopes for the future. Ms. Mitchell says there will be tough teams to compete against after Christmas vacation. The next swimming meet will be held on Saturday, Jan. 7, against Maine South which was second in state last year. Also after vacation
Maine West will swim against Maine East. Ms. Mitchell says, "Last year Maine East won by one point, and I feel this should be a good meet."
On Nov. 19 the Maine West swim team had their first meet. It was held at New Trier West against seven teams. It was a tough meet to start the season.
On Nov. 22 Maine West held a dual meet against Deerfield. The junior varsity squad was defeated 24-128, and the varsity squad was defeated 58-113.
On Nov. 30 the varsity swim team turned in a great performance. Five records were broken to give Maine West second place against Prospect and Niles East.
Dawn Erickson broke the 200-yard individual medley and 100-yard butterfly records. She was also a member of the second place 400‑yard relay team which also broke the standing record. Other members of the relay team were Carolyn Willett, Donna Carstens, and Heidi Eilken. Carolyn Willett won the 500‑yard free style beating the previous record.
In diving competition Many Kay Gerhardt broke the school record with a fantastic performance. Mary Kay could be rated as one of the top three divers in the state. Coach John Carle says, "The team is coming along well. Coaching Mary Kay makes the team very interesting."
On Dec. 3 Maine West swam against Highland Park. The varsity team won 106‑64.
On Dec. 7 Maine West swam against Niles North. The varsity and the junior varsity teams were both victorious. The varsity score was 102-69. The junior varsity score was 113-32.
