Wrestlers Open Season
With Four Victories
The Maine West varsity wrestlers are off to a reasonably fast start. The Warrior wrestlers have won four and lost three. The losses came at the hands of Wheeling, Oak Park, and Wheaton North. The matmen have beaten Prospect, Waukegan West, Waukegan East, and Holy Cross.

Maine West has the top heavyweight wrestler of Illinois in Dave Cavaos. He has won all seven of his matches, all except one by pins. At 6-2, 242, he dominates the heavyweight division.

Humberto Suarez at 185 pounds is four and three with four pins to his credit. Ron Daul also has a winning record at 167. Another excellent wrestler for Maine West is Don Arrigo. Expected to go down state this year, he has won all of his matches at 145. At 112 pounds Diego Montes has won six, including five pins. Rich Spencer at 98 pounds is also posting a winning record.
On the junior varsity level the team has a four wins and three losses record. One of those wins was a 60-3 romp over Oak Park. On Dec. 9 the JV beat Waukegan East and then took second place in a triangular meet with Wheaton North becoming the winner. One of the premier wrestlers on the JV level is heavyweight Luke Praxmarer. He has won most of his matches this year by pinning his opponents.

The Maine West freshman matmen have built a winning record for Coach Tom Mietus so far this season. They lost to Wheeling 18-31 in their first dual meet. Against Prospect they won 51-18 and then lost to Waukegan West 24-36. The freshmen ran up a score of 69-0 against Oak Park.

This past weekend the varsity team won against Waukegan East. Last Saturday they took second place losing only to Wheaton North. This Saturday the matmen will travel to Arlington for the meet starting at 9 a.m.
