Seniors Step Ahead As
Mid-Year Graduates
As the first semester draws to a close, about 70 seniors who are graduating in January will be getting ready to say good‑bye to Maine West. The Sixth Annual Mid‑Year Commencement Exercises will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 31, 1978, in the newly remodeled auditorium.

To graduate in January, a student must have completed 18 1/2 units credits in seven semesters and taken the state mandates: U.S. history, government, health, consumer education, and have two majors, including three years of English, and two minors, including two years of social science. Parental permission is also required for mid‑year graduation.
The graduation exercises include the welcome, given by a school administrator, a graduation address by the Senior class sponsors, and presentation of the diplomas.

What are the reasons for early graduation? Some students wish to take a vacation before going to college in the fall. Others want to work full‑time, and some just want to find out what the world has to offer.
