MW School Emblem
Weathers Changes
BY KONNIE CELICHOWSKI

Did you ever walk in the front entrance and just happen to look down at your feet and notice that you were standing on some sort of dark rust colored designed tiles? When you looked up, you were right below the Warrior statue better known as "the Spirit of Maine West." The majority of the people probably never noticed the statue much less the emblem. Someday, as you are walking in the front doors, take a minute to look up at the statue; then look down, under all the feet and mud, and for the first time in your life, notice your school emblem.

The design is in a dark rust, and it is in the outline of our school emblem (a shield). There are two years printed on the emblem: 1902 is the year that Maine Township first opened and 1959 is the year that Maine West opened.
Believe it or not, that emblem used to be treated with quite a bit of respect. Up until a few years ago, anyone with an ounce of pride in their school would walk around it instead of on top of it. If you find that hard to believe, listen to this; freshmen who used to walk on it had to scrub every inch of it with a toothbrush. I'm sure you realize that this was more for the enjoyment of upperclassmen than to teach the freshmen respect. There were, of course, those people who always walked on it, but basically the emblem had it pretty easy.

Today, if you looked, it would probably be hard to find a person who would walk around it instead of on it. So do your emblem a favor. Next time you are walking by the front entrance think about what that emblem has to put up with, rain and snow and most of all just hundreds of people walking over it. Look down at that emblem that stays there day in and day out, and say "thanks" for promoting Maine West Warrior spirit.
