Final Exams
BY TIM SCHIERBECK

The bell has rung; the period begun, but not like that of others.
You're trying to remember a full semester of algebra and English.

You haven't any rest, but you've got to do your best to keep out of hot water.
You've bitten your nails down to the stubs, but you've only on Question 101.

You were up until two, trying to remember the slide rule but now it's too late; you've forgotten the date.
The smartest kid in class is passing on his test, while you're still stuck on Question 210.

Now you regret having met the friend who said it is all right to cut.
Or how about the night of the Ali fight; you stayed up until two with nothing to do and slept until noon the next day.

But back to the test. You've reread the text, but it doesn't seem to be doing much good.
You're finishing now, taking that final bow, as you hand the test to the teacher, two minutes before the bell.
