Warriors To Face Hawks Tonight
The Maine West Warrior basketball team will play rival Maine South tonight on the Hawks' home court. The Warriors are 5-0 in conference and 12-3 overall while Maine South is 4-0, 9-4 overall.
Last Friday the Warriors defeated Glenbrook South, 77-49, keeping West's conference record unbeaten. Maine West's full court pressure in the second quarter resulted in numerous Warrior baskets. Maine West opened up the game leading by as many as 20 points. The Titans, who were in foul trouble the entire game, committed a season high 18 turnovers in the first half alone as play by both teams was sloppy at times. In the first half Maine West led by as many as 35 points as Coach Gaston Freeman cleared the bench, playing everybody. The scoring for the Warriors was well balanced with Tim Logisz scoring 23, Mike Clark, 18, and Mike English, 12.
On the sophomore level the Warriors were also victorious, 46-25, opening up the game in the second half. The leading scorer for the Warriors was Jim Lindeman.
Over the holiday weekend the Warriors competed in the York tourney held in Elmhurst. The Warriors who were the second seeded team in the tournament finished second losing to Joliet Catholic, 78-72, in the title game.
In the first round Maine West defeated Immaculate Conception, 74-40, as the Warriors outscored the Knights, 25-8, in the second quarter. Karrabas led all scorers with 22 points. Logisz had 20 and English added 15.
The Warriors advanced to the second round and defeated Hinsdale Central, 75-61. In this game West jumped off to a 11-point lead at the half. In the second half it was a different story as Hinsdale Central kept chipping away; down by as many as three with three minutes to go. Maine West then outscored the Red Devils, 10-1, as Tim Logisz scored a season high 35 points. Mike English had 22 and Mike Clark added 10.
In the third round Maine West won, 53-46, over West Leyden. Tim Logisz scored 28 points. This, put together with good defensive efforts by English, Henk, and Dsida on 6'8" center Roger Nickell and the rest of the Knights, secured the victory. The Warriors led the entire way as they held off several West Leyden comeback attempts.
In the championship game the Warriors got off to a slow start down, 24-14, before they tied it at halftime. Maine West grabbed the lead in the early third quarter; before Joliet Catholic took the lead for good. Good free-throw shooting and crucial calls which did not go Maine West's way put the Warrior win streak to an end. Logisz scored 28 points to lead all scorers, English added 21 and Karrabas had 10.
Mike Clark was honorable mention for the all‑tourney team, while Mike English and Tim Logisz made the all‑tourney team. Logisz was voted the M.V.P. of the tournament and also broke a record scoring 111 points in 4 games.
