VOL. XIX, NO. 6
Going into the last week of the season, the Warrior fencing team is trying to improve their record. The fencers last Saturday against New Trier West suffered a disappointing day.
The Warriors didn't advance anyone into the second round of the invitational. The scores of the meet were Mary Copeland, 0-5; Desiree Wiegleb, 0-2; Georgann Weisgerber, 1-3; Cindy Peca, 2-3; Osilla Remenyik, 1-4.
Against Maine South the Warriors lost again by the score of 12-1. The lone Warrior winner was Mary Copeland 5-0. Other scores were Desiree Wiegleb, 0-2; Cathy Ptach, 0-2; Holly Hamilton, 0-2; and Jan Nelson, 0-2.
Against New Trier East the Warriors won 11-7. Scores in that meet were Linda Miller, 2-1; Mary Copeland, 2-1; Sue Lindeman, 0-3; Holly Hamilton, 3-0; Desiree Wiegleb, 2-1; Jan Nelson, 0-1.
The Junior Olympics trials are Jan. 28, in which the top three girls from Illinois will go to Houston to compete. "The best hopes for Maine West are Mary Copeland, who qualified two years ago, and Sue Lineman," said Coach Karen Kenyon.
On Dec. 17 the Warriors competed in a tournament at Maine South. Mary Copeland placed fifth and Osilla Remenyik finished sixth.
This year's fencing team is coed like many other sports. The boys on the team are Steve Jones, Pat Clark, and Chris Battista.
The junior varsity won 14-4 against Maine South. Pat Clark, in his first meet, won 3-0. Other scores were Georgann Weisgerber, 3-0; Chris Battista, 2-0; Osilla Remenyik, 1-0; Jori Downing, 2-1; Marg Fankhauser, 1-2; and Debbie Davis, 2-1. The Warriors have one more meet because of a snow cancellation.
