Warriors To Hold Invitational
The Maine West varsity wrestling team will host an eight team invitational tomorrow afternoon starting at noon. It will be the first invitational Maine West has ever held.
Last Friday Maine West wrestled Glenbrook North at home. On the varsity level the Warriors lost 32-18; the sophomores also lost 34-30, while the freshman won 41-20. Winners for the varsity were Dave Cavasos by pin and Ron Dahi by pin. Diego Montes and Bill Krusinski also were winners. On the sophomore level the winners were Bob Curtin, Dan Fiarito, Dave Karling, Jeff Wilhelm, Paul Praxmarer, and Don Arrigo.
On Saturday the varsity team traveled to Forest View for a quad meet. Maine West beat St. Viator's, 53-6, and Forest View, 32-26. Spencer and Montes won twice by pins. Arrigo, Gray, Wood, Tom Cavasos and Frazier won once by pin. Wartalski and Krucinski were also single winners, while Dave Cavasos continued his unbeaten streak by winning twice.
The sophomores wrestled in a 16‑team meet held at Maine East. The Warriors placed in the meet. Praxmarer, Schultie, Garza, Beam, Detzner, and McAvoy were single winners. Dan Fiarito and Steve Hilliard were double winners; each placed fourth losing to the eventual winners.
The varsity squad is 1-1 in conference and 5-4 overall. The sophomores are 2-4-1 overall and 0-2 in conference.
Over the holiday weekend the Maine West wrestling team placed fourth out of eight teams in the Lake Park Invitational held on Dec. 29.
On the 98‑pound level Rick Spencer placed fifth winning one match and losing two. At 105 pounds Bob Curtin won one and lost two finishing sixth. Paul Praxmarer won one match and also finished sixth. Dennis O'Toole finished in second place on the 126‑pound level winning two matches, and Steve Fang won two matches and finished third at 133 pounds. Bob Wood and Tony Cavasos each finished in fifth place winning two matches each. Jeff Wilhelm finished sixth, and Tom Frazier finished third winning two matches. Don Arrigo and Dave Cavasos each won their weight classes. Arrigo won three by decision. Cavasos with two pins (one a record of 18 seconds) was named outstanding wrestler of the tournament.
