Ellen Christ Named
DAR Award Winner
Ellen Christ has been awarded this year's Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) Good Citizen award. The award is given to the student who has most demonstrated leadership, dependability, patriotism, citizenship, and responsibility toward others.
The aim of the project is to pay tribute to youthful character and to call attention to those qualities which are desirable in good citizens. This is not a popularity contest.
Ellen is a senior and the first girl ever to be elected Student Council president. Ellen is a consistent honor roll student and also a science award recipient. Her student activities include membership in Pep Club, International Club, Spanish Club. Brotherhood Society, Ski Club, Quad Council, and President's Council.
The students of the Senior Class selected by vote, three students whom they believed were best qualified as good citizens. From these three students, the faculty selected one student to represent the school as its Good Citizen. One person is chosen from each Maine school every year. The three candidates from Maine West were Ellen Christ, Mary Muldowney, and Ami Nyberg.

The next step is state competition in which a questionnaire will be filled out in order that the Illinois Good Citizen may be chose on the basis of merit. The winner of state competition will go on the national contest.
The DAR winner receives a pin and certificate of award. The winning student in each state will receive a government bond of $100. Finally, the winner nationally will receive a $1,000 scholarship. Ellen Christ commented, "I am pleased that DAR has such an award. It is a fantastic award and a great honor."
