Tri‑S Plans Third Field Trip
BY STEVE HINES
The Social Science Society will take their third field trip of the year on Tuesday, Feb. 28. Their destination will be three religious institutions in the Chicagoland area, which will be toured.
Ms. Mary Gienko is co‑sponsor of Tri‑S along with Mr. David Winter. He explained the purpose of the coming field trip. "We are trying to show the Tri‑S members the kinds of religious institutions that are operating in the Chicago area and how they affect the way their members live their lives.
The Tri‑S field trip will begin with a trip to a Jewish synagogue. Mr. Harvey Kelber, a counselor at Maine West and practicing Jew, will explain the Jewish religion and tell how it was founded. He will tell Judaism's effect on a practicing Jew and give them a tour of his synagogue.
The tour's next stop will be at the Bai Hai Temple in Wiimette. A guide from the temple will explain the religious beliefs taught at the temple. He will then accompany the Tri‑S members on a stroll through the magnificent building.
Once this stop has been completed, the Tri‑S members will board the buses and head for a restaurant. If it is possible, they will eat some kind of ethnic food, because, according to Mr. Winter, "It is a much better way to climax an ethnic trip than by stopping somewhere and eating a hotdog."
Tri‑S members will make their final stop at the Serbian Orthodox Church of the Holy Resurrection. A guide from the newly built church will escort them around the building and explain how the Serbian religion affects its worshippers. He will answer questions and tell why the church broke from Catholicism.
Students who are interested in accompanying Tri-S members on the field trip or would be interested in joining Tri-S should contact Ms. Gienko or Mr. Winter or come to the next Social Science Society meeting. Meetings are held on Friday mornings in R-209 as announced in the bulletin.
