Social Science Dept. Holds Seminar
For 18 years the Maine West Social Science Forum has been designed to bring resources from the community state and nation. The Maine West forum has brought people like Senator Charles Percy, Representative Abner Mikva, Governor James Thompson, and other government leaders.
On Feb. 13, as a part of the Political Involvement Program (PIP), the Republican Primary Tenth Congressional District candidates spoke to the senior government classes second and third periods. The candidates were interested in three major topics: 1) Explaining their candidacy to the students, 2) Competing with their opponents for the Republican primary election on Mar. 21, and 3) betting student participation on the primary election as the campaign heats up. The format of their presentations were from five to eight minutes long. The students had a chance to participate by cross examining the candidates.
A primary is the major political party's way of choosing the man who will run against Democratic Congressman Abner Mika in the U.S. House of Representatives in the general election in November of 1979.
The tenth Congressional District is considered to be the most closely fought Congressional election in the United States and is targeted by the Republican Party as the Congressional District they most want back in the Republican fold.
Students who participate in a political campaign can receive optional class credit for certain assignments. It is a way used to encourage student participation. Mr. Eric Edstrom says that "because there is so much interest in the Tenth District, the Maine West students are privileged to be part of history in the making."
