Students Design School Artwork
BY MAUREEN CUDAHY

Did you know that much of the art work decorating Maine West was done by students who, at one time or another, attended Maine West? Well, Maine West students are very talented! For instance, the statue symbolizing the "Spirit of Maine West" was done by Todd Riddell '64. It took six months of hard work to complete the statue. Two of those months were dedicated to sketching and thinking of ideas. The statue is made of steel mesh and burlap, which was then dipped in plaster. It weighs about 200 pounds.

The "Spirit of Maine West" symbolizes the sport spirit and the feeling of all Maine West students and faculty.
The hooked rug in the main office was done by Donna Linboe '64 and was purchased by the Art Department.

In the social science section of the LRC, there is a painting created by George Bethurem '67. A four year art student while at Maine West, George later went on to attend Bradley University on a scholarship and majored in fine arts. He painted the picture while he was a senior. The painting was donated to the LRC by art students.

Also in the LRC, there is a totem pole which was carved by Steve Geikow '71. The totem pole took six months to carve. It was made out of a 10‑foot fence post.
