Distributive Education DECA Blue and DECA Gold
Offer Experience for Students
BY KEVIN BUSCH

The distributive education program here at Maine West goes by another name: DECA (Distributive Education Clubs of America). DECA gives students enrolled in the program opportunities to develop leadership roles in business.

Maine West has two chapters of DECA, a blue and a gold chapter, each consisting of 20 students. The DECA sponsor is Mr. Elwood Hughes, who has been sponsor since Maine West had its first chapter of DECA in 1965. Then in 1975 it expanded to two chapters.

Students who are interested in being enrolled in DECA must have an interest in marketing. Then he applies for DECA through his counselor and is then interviewed by Mr. Hughes, who will make the final decision.
DECA students usually get out around noon, and after their dismissal they proceed to their jobs where they earn their grade, which is compiled from evaluation sheets sent in by the students employers.

Besides DECA being just a class there are also merchandising and marketing contests that measure students' compentency in cashering and salesmanship skills. These contests are held once a year at national, state, and local levels. At the local level Maine West has done exceptionally well, which is quite evident by the well stocked trophy case across from C-101 where the distributive education classes are held.

Recently Maine West's DECA chapters sent members, as chosen by Mr. Hughes, to this year's state level marketing and merchandising competition held in Springfield. Mr. Hughes said, "I expect us to do quite well."
