Maine West To Hold First Annual Heart Day
BY STEVE HINES
America's number one killer will be attacked on Friday, Apr. 14, when Maine West holds its first annual Heart Day. The purpose of Heart Day is to stress the importance of the heart to Maine West's students and faculty.
One change everyone is sure to notice will be in the cafeteria. There, low cholesterol hot dogs and hamburgers will be served. This is only one of the many programs which will be held on Heart Day.
Cardiopulmonary resuscitation will be demonstrated as one feature during Heart Day. This skill, termed the most important thing one can do for a person who has had a heart attack, is extremely valuable. It can save a person from death or brain damage.
Many people have the attitude that "heart disease only happens to old people." Unfortunately, this opinion is false. Just recently a senior from a high school in the Chicagoland area suffered a heart attack in gym class. Heart diseases are caused by stress, high cholesterol food, over exertion, and high blood pressure.
Blood pressure will be checked on all Maine West students who return their parent-permission forms. These forms will be available in about a month. Having your blood pressure checked is important for two reasons.
The more important one, according to Ms. Hope Needelman, "is to get the students into the habit of having their blood pressure checked. It may not be important now, but in the future it will be."
The Student Council will be publicizing Heart Day, and members will distribute pamphlets which tell the importance of exercising properly and regularly. Mrs. Gail Macdonald, faculty sponsor of Student Council along with Mr. Ervin Geisler, is working on getting the students ready for Heart Day. Ms. Needelman is working with the Heart Association to get the doctors and nurses to take the blood pressure and to staff the anti‑smoking clinic.
Most of Heart Day's activities will be held in refurnished L‑wing. Students are encouraged to attend any of the activities held. They can come to Heart Day activities during study or PAR periods.
Heart Day is being held to stress the heart and how to take care of it. Because few people know how to take care of their heart, heart attacks, stroke, and other heart diseases kill Americans more frequently than any other disease. Heart Day will show you how to take care of your heart, tell you if your have anything wrong with your heart, and show you what to do to help a person who has a heart attack. Heart Day will be profitable for all the students at Maine West and the faculty too.
