The Maine West swim team, coached by Mr. Scott Chovanec, started its season last Friday at Niles East. When asked about the season, Coach Chovanec said, "The team is hurting in depth in the short free style sprint," but "the team had an excellent season last year. I hope we can top it this year." Coach Chovanec also said that Maine West's toughest meets would be against Glenbrook South and Glenbrook North.
The tankmen suffered the loss of Randy Roel, who is temporarily out of the season because of tendonitis. Other top swimmers are Rob MacNab, individual medley and butterfly, and Kurt Altergott, distance free style.
There are about 13 swimmers on the freshman team, which is coached by Mr. Jim Borowski. There approximately 25 swimmers on the sophomore and junior varsity level and 15 swimmers on the varsity squad.
The manager for the swim team this year is Kim Dunham; the assistant manager is Ray Pakornny. The statistian is Kathy Schick, who is also the swimguard team aid in each swimming and diving meet.
This Wednesday, Mar. 8, the freshman swim team battles the Proviso West freshmen. The meet will start at 5 p.m.; it is a home meet. Then on Friday, Mar. 10, all levels of the Maine West swim team take on Evanston in a home meet which starts at 6:15 p.m. On Mar. 14, the Arlington swim team comes to Maine West; the meet will start at 4:30. On Friday, Mar. 17, the Maine West tankmen take on Waukegan East here at home. At 7 p.m. on Mar. 23 the varsity and sophomore levels of the Maine West swim team battle Proviso West.
