Dave Cavazos of Maine West took third place in the heavyweight class in the State Wrestling Tournament. Earning his trip to Champaign, he took second in Sectionals at West Leyden. The Maine West wrestling team tied for eleventh place at Sectionals. Along with Cavazos, 112‑pounder Diego Montes and 138‑pounder Don Arrigo did not place high enough to advance to the State tournament.
In the first Sectional match Cavazos defeated 280-pounder, Don Mackey, West Leyden, 11-9. In the second round he won 4-1 over Duffey Volkman. In the finals he dropped a 4-1 decision to East Leyden's Kurt Bankston.
At Champaign in a preliminary round match Cavazos won a 13-1 decision over Lawrence Fondren, Dunbar, whose record was 30-4. In Cavazos' second match of Friday afternoon he met his toughest opponent. Mark Maloney of Downers Grove North came into the match with a 36-0 record. Cavazos was pinned in 1:20 with a reverse fireman's carry. Maloney went on to take second in State.
In wrestleback competition Cavazos won all of his matches taking third place in State. David won four matches in one day to do this. In a first round wrestleback Cavazos beat Jim Jaranowski, T.F.North of Calumet City, 4-3. After one hour's rest Dave pinned Larry Daniels (24-1), Fenger, 5-3 in a rugged match. After another hour's rest Dave pinned Bob Brand, (35-1), Mascoutah, in 4:33. For third place in State Cavazos wrestled Tommy Howard (22-1) of Tilden Tech. Howard's only lost was to Cavazos in the Maine West Invitational. Cavazos won a decision, 6-3.
In the heavyweight championship match Kurt Bankston (27-0), East Leyden, won a decision over Mark Maloney of Downers Grove North, 9-4. East Leyden of Franklin Park ran away with the Class AA team championship. Their 126-pounder, 132-pounder, 138-pounder, and heavyweight wrestlers all won individual state titles.
