Speech Team Winners
Attend S.C.O.T.I.E.
The Maine West Speech Team ended their season on Mar. 4 with a trip downstate to Belleville. The speech team attended the annual state tournament called S.C.O.T.I.E. To attend S.C.O.T.I.E. the speech team member must have scored a first place in any of the invitational, district, or sectional tournaments.
Those who qualified were Kathy Bashem '79 and Kathleen Sanford '78, for prose reading; Don Knowles '78 and Yvonne Pytlik '79, for extemporary speaking; Mary McMahon '78, for verse reading; Kevin Marquette '78, for original comedy; Sue Ragusin '79, original oration; Janice Johnson '80, for humorous interpretation. Jeff Stine '78 and Ann Zemaitis '78, qualified for humorous duet acting.
In order to receive recognition in any of these events, the participants must score a rating of superior from six out of eight judges. If any of the ratings are below excellent, the person is disqualified from winning. Those receiving awards for Maine West were Kathy Bashem and Janice Johnson.
Mr. Ronald Mills and Ms. Marianne Guyon sponsored the trip. Mr. Mills said, "To win at S.C.O.T.I.E. proves that you are among the best in the state." This tournament capped off a very successful season for the Speech Team, according to Mr. Mills.
