DECA Members Represent
MW At Springfield
The Maine West students from the distributive education program or DECA (Distributive Education Clubs of America) participated in the state competition held Mar. 3 and 4 in Springfield.
The competition was held in divisions of marketing and distribution, which consisted of general marketing, food marketing, apparel and accessories, and general merchandising.
Both the blue and gold DECA chapters were represented at Springfield. The 10 members from Maine West were Arlene Hagy '79, Joan Gages '79, Karen Ecklund '78, Mary Wojtowicz '79, Tim O'Donnell '79, Mike Paul '79, Nancy Soranno '79, Laura Zientara '79, Beth Bartolone '79, and Diana Kupeck '79.
Award winners included Arlene Hagy who won a second place trophy in overall apparel and accessories competition. Over 100 distributive education students were entered in this event.
The contest measured the distributive education student's overall merchandising abilities in apparel and accessories. This included such areas as selling, math, operations, human relations, advertising display, management, merchandising policies, product knowledge, and communications. Arlene now qualifies to enter the national contest to be held in Washington, D.C. in May.
Other award winners along with' Arlene Hagy were Karen Ecklund, second place medallion in general marketing (merchandising), Joni Gages, one of the top eight finalists in overall general marketing, and Tim O'Donnell took third place medallion in food marketing (communications).
These awards and many more can be seen in the trophy case outside C-101 where the distributive education classes are held. Many of the awards were won in similar competitions.
