Spring Vacation Begins Today
Just Think of All the Fun
BY TIM SCHIERBECK
At 3:27 today spring vacation officially starts, even though most students started a few weeks ago. High school students from all over flock to Florida, the sunshine state. Teachers and homework are all but forgotten, along with locker combinations and room numbers.
Not all students will be basking on the balmy beaches; some of us unlucky souls are stuck in Des Plaines. Those of us who have to work will be hoping our Florida friends are sunburnt and sick. Still, while some are swimming, others will be skiing. The Maine West Ski Club leaves for Colorado on Mar. 25. Other students are shipped off to relatives for a week of punishment. The girls will catch up on their soap operas, and the boys will be watching "The Gong Show" and "Popeye."
Spring vacation gives students a chance to relax no matter where they are. It also gives students a chance to get away from their parents and learn the responsibilities of single living.
For those students stuck in Des Plaines it is a different story. The luxurious Des Plaines Theater is is holding its annual "Planet of the Apes" film festival. The park district is sponsoring a mud slide day at South Park Hill and a treasure hunt along Axehead. On Mar. 28, bring your suntan lotion to the beaches of Lake Opeka along with a sack lunch.
Is there a bad side to spring vacation? School seems harder after spring vacation. Maybe it is because during that week of freedom we went to bed late, got up late, and put in a hard day of doing nothing. Grades generally go down because all the boys and girls are in love. The third quarter slump carries into the fourth quarter blues, and spring fever develops into summer school sickness.
There are about 52 days of school left after spring vacation, so just keep telling yourself, "I can bear it." During this week of relaxation start a new hobby. Go outside before the snow melts, make some snowballs, and save them for July.
