Maine West Offers Many Courses
To Express Special Talents
By SUSAN SCHWINGBECK
Photography, painting, drama, sculpturing, or even debate‑it's all a part of expressing yourself; and Maine West has it all. Many of us don't realize it, but Maine West has many programs you can take to express yourself properly.
The Art Department is only one of the few. Whether it be weaving or pottery, sculpting, or painting, it all shows a little of what the person is like and feels. Anyone can see all of the art pieces displayed at any time in the showcases in E‑wing. Each year the Art Department also holds an annual art show in the spring. So many people have a limited view on art, but in reality it is a large and exciting field for many students.
Photography also has a large department here where you can learn everything from basic parts of a camera to developing and enlarging film. By taking this course you can also learn how to take pictures creatively. This is done by double exposing, half tone processes, and much more.
Here at Maine West, drama is a very popular department according to many students. Many people believe that drama classes are simply a matter of getting up in front of the class and acting, but it is so much more. For example, the evaluation of plays and the study of ancient Greek theatre set up are only a few of the things you can learn.
Although many people believe that you can try out and make it for plays only if you are a member of the drama classes, they have a very wrong view. Many students have participated in the plays who have had no experiences with the drama department. Just think of all the actors in our world today who started out as Robin Hood or Maid Marian in their school plays. Maybe you're one of them.
So next time you can't think of a class to take to fill your schedule, try one of Maine's many specialized departments.
