Girl Gymnasts Show Improvement
The Maine West girls' gymnastics team now holds a record of 2-4. Coach Judith Beck said of the team, "Several team members are showing constant improvement in meets; continued effort should result in many solid routines in future meets."
The Warriors opened the season with two winning meets. In their first meet against Waukegan West the varsity won 77.95-45.85, and junior varsity won 47.85-20.60. Against Niles North the varsity girls scored 78.95-76.15 and junior varsity 48.56-39.75.
Against Maine North the varsity team lost 77.7-76.1. This meet was followed by three consecutive losses to Maine East, Niles West, and Glenbrook North. Against Maine East the varsity team lost 95.05-85, but the junior varsity won by a score of 54.30-48.35. The Warriors lost, however, on both levels in their meet against Niles West with scores of 78.0-74.9 and 51.35 and 46.5. Their most recent meet was held on Mar. 8 against Glenbrook North. The varsity girls lost 90.65-82.80 and junior varsity, 51.50-47.55.
Despite the successive losses as a team, individually the girls have been placing well. Colleen Monahan has placed first and second in compulsory vaulting and the optional uneven bars. Kim Kratz has taken first, second, and third in optional vaulting and floor exercise routines.
Joanie Gallucci has both first and second places in compulsory balance beam and floor exercise routines. Dianna Dalenberg has placed first, second, and third in optional vaulting and floor exercise. Mary Kay Gerhardt scored first, second, and third in optional vaulting and on the uneven bars. Mary Sherkey has taken second place twice in optional vaulting.
Maureen Mukai has taken all three places in optional balance beam routines, and Barb Rieck has taken first place three times on the beam. Others who have placed high in scoring were Reggie Nero and Fran Martorano, second in optional floor exercise, and Sue Meyers, first in the compulsory bar routine.
Two other high scorers for the Warriors were Alina Komendowski, first in compulsory vaulting, and Barb Lofgren, second in an optional beam routine.
