VOL. XIX, NO. 9
MARCH 23, 1978
M‑Club To Choose
Athlete of the Year
By FRANK FIARITO

The month is March but already some people are thinking about the Maine West athlete of the year. This year like any other year there are a numerous amount of candidates.

To head the list is Bob Aslan (M‑Club president). Bob is involved in three sports: football, indoor and outdoor track. As a football player Bob rushed for over 450 yards in four games. In the fifth game of the season he suffered a knee injury, and the team seemed to slip from the race for first place. Bob's big game was 243 yards rushing and three touchdowns against Waukegan East. In track Aslan runs in both the 50 and 100‑yard dashes.

Another candidate is Dave Cavazos. Dave competed in football and wrestling. As a wrestler Dave set five new Warrior records (most pins in season and career; most wins in season and career; and most medals won from state career).
Tim Logisz is the prime candidate from basketball; he averaged 23 points a game leading the team in both scoring and assists. Tim was one of the main reasons for the Warriors' good season, 20‑7.

From swimming Randy Roel is probably one of the best swimmers Maine West has had in a long time. Last year Randy placed eleventh in state as he qualified in the 100‑yard backstroke and the 50‑yard free style.

Bob Tasova was 4-2 on varsity, and he also had a good year. Karl Henk batted a sizzling .380 and was one of the leading hitters in conference. Also Willie Garesche, with his strong throwing arm behind the plate, is a candidate.

Tennis has two candidates in Tom Gebhardt and Bob Wyatt. Tom is one of the team's leading singles players, and Bob is the leading doubles players.

From baseball there are also numerous candidates. The Warriors, one of the top teams in the state, have loads of talent.
